A Synchronous Optical NETwork is a fiber-optic transmission system for high-speed digital traffic using self-healing ring architecture that is able to reroute traffic to a second transmission route in the event one fails. DWDM DDR provides Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM). DWDM uses multiple light wavelengths to transmit data from different sources together on a single optical fiber. IP, SONET and ATM data can all travel at the same time over the same optical fiber. DWDM is expected to become the main technology of all-fiber optical networks of the future.
